KayaLeg Assembly Procedure

With the aid of the accompanying photos the KayaLeg assembly (total weight 15.7 oz) is quite intuitive. If needed a detailed procedure follows:

  1. Assemble Velcro strap (1) between Velcro clamp angle (2) and bottom angle (3) onto the fore side of bottom angle (3).
    1. Velcro orientation: loops (soft) side in contact with the fore side of the bottom angle (3).
    2. Clamp angle orientation: see attached photos.
    3. Fastener:
        1. One flat head bolt (6)
        2. One ny-loc nut (8).
    4. Align components and tighten securely.
  2. For making it easier to locate the two holes in the kayak deck temporarily assemble the two mounting angles (4) onto the end holes of the bottom angle (3) in the following manner:
    1. Mounting angle (4) orientation:
        1. the slotted long leg attached to the fore side of bottom angle (3)
        2. the single hole short leg pointing (temporarily) in the fore direction, i.e. not tucked under the bottom angle (3)
        3. After the procedure for locating the kayak deck holes is completed the mounting angle orientation will be reversed so that the short leg is tucked under the bottom angle (3) as shown in the adjacent photos.

    1. Fasteners for each mounting angles (4):
        1. One flat head bolt (6)
        2. One flat washer (9) placed over the slotted holeinstall
        3. One ny-loc nut (8). (Hint: if available for the hole location procedure it may be easier to use a standard ¼”-20 nut which is later replaced with the provided ny-loc nut (8)).
    2. At this point tighten the nuts only to the point where the angles can still slide in the slotted hole.
  1. Locating and drilling the two mounting holes in the kayak deck:
    1. Location:
      1. On a line perpendicular to the kayak centerline about 2” to 3” forward of the cockpit and each hole equidistant from the kayak centerline.
        1. Place on the deck surface a strip of masking tape at least about 15” long to mark this line.
        2. On the masking tape mark the kayak centerline.
      2. install1Place the assembly (at this point consisting of Velcro strap, Velcro clamp, bottom angle and 2 mounting angles in temporary orientation) onto the kayak deck:
        1. Orientation: The bottom leg of the bottom angle (3) facing aft.
        2. The assembly centred over the kayak centerline.
        3. The Velcro strap wrapped back under and around the bottom angle (3).
        4. Minimum height above the deck such that the Velcro strap is essentially a cushion between the bottom angle and the high point of the curved deck.
        5. The mounting angles (4) resting on the masking tape strip.
        6. While holding the assembly level and perpendicular to the kayak centerline, adjust the mounting angles (4) to a support position and flush contact with the masking tape on the deck surface and then tighten the bolts in the slotted holes of the mounting angles.
        7. Using the mounting angle holes as a template, mark on the masking tape the location of the two deck holes.
      3. Drill a ¼” hole through the deck at each location determined above and remove the masking tape.
  2. Complete the assembly:
    1. Disassemble and then reassemble the two mounting angles (4) from their temporary to permanent orientation such that the short leg points aft and thus is tucked under the bottom angle (3). Fasteners for each mounting angle as follows:
        1. One flat head bolt (6)
        2. One flat washer (9) placed over the slotted hole
        3. One ny-loc nut (8)
        4. velcro-clampTighten nuts loosely until completing the next step.
    2. Fasten this assembly to the kayak through the two deck holes using for each hole:
        1. Bolt (7)
        2. One nylon fender washer (11) between the mounting angle (4) and the deck
        3. Below the deck: one nylon fender washer (11), one ss fender washer (10) and one ny-loc nut (8).

Tighten the nuts on these hex bolts and the flat head bolts installed loosely in the previous step.

  1. Assemble the top angle (5) onto the slotted holes of the bottom angle (3):
    1. Top angle (5) orientation:
        1. Mounted to the aft side of bottom angle (3)
        2. The non-holed leg facing aft
    2. Fasteners for each of two holes:
        1. One flat head bolt (6)
        2. One flat washer (9) placed over the slotted hole
        3. One ny-loc nut (8)
    3. Adjusting the KayaLeg clamp to fit the paddle shaft:
        1. Slightly loosen the flat head bolts (6) that fasten the top angle (5) to the bottom angle (3)
        2. With the Velcro strap retracted place the paddle shaft into the clamp opening between the top and bottom angles. Adjust the opening to fit the paddle shaft and tighten the two bolts. Hint: You may need to remove the paddle shaft to do the final tightening of the ny-loc nuts on the two bolts.

Caution: While I have experienced no issues regarding deck strength from installing and using KayaLeg on my polyethylene and Kevlar (34 lb. Saranac 14 Classic) kayaks that may not be representative of all kayak and use situations and so a decision to install KayaLeg on your kayak is at your risk. You may wish to install a reinforcement patch of a suitable material (e.g. fiberglass) on the underside of the deck around the two mounting holes.
